Gov. Nelson Rockefeller at Phelps Lane Park (Visions of the Past)

Visions of the PastOn July 17, 1962, New York State Governor Nelson Rockefeller (the very happy gentleman in the center, with outstretched arm) made a visit to Phelps Lane Park, North Babylon. The stop was part of a whirlwind tour of Suffolk County, during a re-election year.

This picture is one of my favorites, not just because of the famous visitor. Elda Lake (the name of the lake at Phelps Lane Park, the reason for which will have to come another day), is clearly seen in the background, and I like the composition of people who appear to give the Governor a great welcome.

Now, if I am really honest, it is not my FAVORITE photo of Gov. Rockefeller. My favorite would have to be this series of 4 photos showing the Governor eating a hot dog at the Phelps Lane concession stand. (All photographs from the historic collections of the Town of Babylon History Museum, Town of Babylon, NY; courtesy of Hon. Arthur M. Cromarty.)

Governor Nelson Rockefeller cheerily presented with a hot dog by the concession staff.
Gov. Rockefeller is gamely enjoying his hot dog.
Town Supervisor Arthur M. Cromarty (left) also has a hot dog but makes sure to smile for the cameras. Congressman James R. Grover (right), looks on.
Congressman Grover (second from right) and Assemblyman Joseph F. Carlino (right) keep up with the Governor, while Supervisor Cromarty (left) looks like he is ready to direct the group to the next stop of their tour.

These photos always make me smile! 😊
