Celebrating the Town of Babylon

A Brief Look at the Town's 90th and 100th Anniversaries

The Town of Babylon was formed in 1872, after separating from the Town of Huntington. In 2022, the Town will celebrate its 150th Anniversary - its Sesquicentennial. In anticipation of that momentous anniversary, this is a brief look at the Town's 90th Anniversary in 1962, and 100th Anniversary in 1972.

Lt. Governor Malcolm Wilson delivering remarks at a ceremony commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Town of Babylon, in 1962. The ceremony took place in front of Babylon Town Hall on Sunrise Highway. (Malcolm Wilson succeeded Nelson Rockefeller as Governor of New York in 1973.) Just behind Mr. Wilson, on the right, is Town Supervisor Arthur M. Cromarty, wearing the bow tie.

In 1962, the Babylon Town Hall on Sunrise Highway was just 4 years old, having been dedicated on October 18, 1958.

The 1960 census recorded 142,309 residents in the Town of Babylon, more than 3-times the 45,556 population in 1950. (The 2010 census recorded 213,603 residents.)

With a new Town Hall and a growing community, it was natural for the Town of Babylon to take some time to acknowledge its history and celebrate 90 years of achievements.

The Babylon Town Leader newspaper published a 12-page commemorate section for the 90th anniversary. Click the link below to view the document.

Once again, in 1972, the Town of Babylon gathered together to celebrate with community events and a Town-wide parade.

The Beacon newspaper published a 5-page Centennial Section honoring the Town of Babylon's 100th Anniversary in 1972. Click the link below to view the document.

As we approach the Town's 150th Anniversary, we are looking back at previous celebrations for historical inspiration and with joyous anticipation. Anniversary details will be posted on the Town of Babylon website by the end of January, 2022.
