The End of World War II - 80th Anniversary

This is the 80th Anniversary of the End of World War II. It is estimated that 21-25 million military personnel died in World War II worldwide – more than 400,000 of those were Americans. More than 1.5 million residents of New York State served in World War II, and 31,215 of them died in service
.

Babylon Leader, May 10, 1945 describing local events following V-E Day

It is hard to estimate how many total Town of Babylon residents served in World War II. There are honor rolls and newspaper articles that documented the names of people who served, but those typically only listed people who were Town residents during the time of their service.

The postwar population boom increased the Town of Babylon population from 24,297 in 1940 to 45,556 in 1950, and then to 142,309 residents in 1960. A population increase of 485% in just 20 years.

Most of the families that settled here included at least one veteran. Additionally, there were many people who moved to the Town of Babylon to work in the aviation factories in and around East Farmingdale. There were also scores of people that came to work in the business and factories whose former employees had left to join the military. To all those people that served in the military, and those who did their part from the home front - Thank You For Your Service.

In World War II, at least 74 people from the Town of Babylon died in service to their country, 73 men and one woman. Most of them grew up in the Town of Babylon, attending the public schools, playing on local sports teams, and working in local businesses. Some of them never really lived in the Town of Babylon.

The early 1940s were a time of transition for many people. For example, imagine a family that lived in Brooklyn. They had a child that graduated high school and was then drafted into service. The son goes into the military and the parents choose to move to the Town of Babylon for work, or for a quieter life in the country. That military son may have considered himself a Brooklynite but if he died while in service, it was very likely that his hometown became listed as his parents’ residence, particularly when medals were awarded posthumously.

As we have done with other lists of memorials, the Town of Babylon Historian’s Office embraces and documents all those service members, whether they were residents for their entire lifetime or just a short time.

To be frankly honest, collecting this information can be an emotionally tasking project. We find the photographs, we learn about their service, we read the names of their family members. In each of their stories it’s hard not to see our own loved ones and people that we know. Each one of these people didn’t get the chance to come back to the Town of Babylon and contribute to our communities.

This is not just a list of names. This is our tribute to these 74 people, and to all the people that knew and loved them. The Town of Babylon remembers you -

Thank Your For Your Sacrifice.
